QWhy did you redesign your own website?

A:Having worked in the design industry for over 30 years, I’ve accumulated a considerable amount of work. There were not that many that could be put in my last version, as they were mostly commercial tasks.
Besides, the website was created a longtime ago which is now out of style. With a different stance this time, I’ve rearranged my projects in recent years and put them in my new website. >Chi

QWhat is the difference with your stance this time?

A:Creative works that I genuinely like and are meaningful are selected this time. The subjects mostly concern community or social issues. There are also design and artistic creations from the last few years.
In comparison to products for commercial use or during my days as an employee, I find this collection much more relevant.
Some of the pieces have appeared in different joint or solo exhibitions. There won't be any more opportunities for them to be displayed again, so those will be included in the website as well.

QDo you accept commissioned work?

A:Yes, I’ve always taken on design work, from graphic design to research and development.
Since I’ve met numerous people working in social welfare organizations lately, my work mostly covers community design these days. As a designer for many years, my design work has involved different industries. I have been commissioned to do artistic creations only in recent years.

QDo you have your own company?

A:In my younger days I aspired to have my own company. I did establish one but without a stable client base, it was hard to carry on. I believe many people have the same experience. My many years of working in different companies in design management has changed my perception towards “companies” for a long time. Understanding its pros and cons, I prefer to manage my design with more freedom and enjoy my creative work with less pressure. I have my own studio. To accommodate the needs of clients, I can choose to cooperate either individually or in partnership based on the nature of work.

QAre there many other cultural and educational items?

A:Yes, I’m not the kind of person who only focuses on my own creative work. I also participate in setting up organizations, writing and initiating cultural activities. Hong Kong Design Community was co-founded in 2005, which is currently renamed Hong Kong Art & Design Community. I’ve published a few books and written articles for magazines, attended cultural exchange activities and acted as an instructor in community activities. Educational activities outside the system are particularly important to me.
